Schmincke PRIMAcryl® PROFESSIONAL Heavy Body acrylic has been completely revamped. Sustainability, reducing the CO2 footprint and further improving and expanding the colour range were the main drivers. A new, innovative binder was chosen - largely made from recycled raw materials - that is free of microplastics. The pigmentation of the existing colours has been optimised and new colours have been added to the range. Thus, in addition to the existing cadmium colours, you can now choose cadmium-free alternatives that are almost identical in colour. And with the exception of 792 Ivory black, no animal ingredients are used. The consistency of the paint is still buttery - heavy body. Limited Edition Artists Oil Paint 37ml Tubes: Brown Ochre, Rust Red, Iron Violet, made from pigments reclaimed from polluted US rivers.

For over a decade, artist John Sabraw, engineer Guy Riefler, environmentalist Michelle Shively, and a team of students at Ohio University were trying to develop a sustainable solution to the problem of pollution from mining run-off in the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. They came up with a process that separated out the iron oxides from  river water to make a light-fast and safe artists' pigment. The pigment is heated to various temperatures to achieve each colour.

As a paint manufacturer that promises to be kind to artists and the environment, turning this pigment into paint was something Gamblin felt both compelled and honoured to do. Gamblin is also giving 20% of set sales back to the cause. Purchasing this set not only benefits the project financially, but it literally and directly creates a demand for the pigment and a demand for clean rivers.

Gamblin also designed this set without plastic shrink-wrap. The sleeve and insert are recyclable, and the structure of the packaging has a function; it’s a primed panel made in Oregon by American Easel. It’s the ideal painting surface made with U.S.-grown poplar sides and a Baltic birch face.
